PUNCHing ABOVE; Russell Rises Weight Class, Wins Title

BOXING: Bundaberg's Gaige Russell didn't need much inspiration to fight last weekend in Mackay.

Russell was itching to box at the recent North Queensland games after missing out on the chance to compete in the Australian titles.

He couldn't fight after there was no one to box in his age and weight group, Russell was the only competitor.

This time, Russell made it count.

Boxing in a higher weight division, from 45kg to 50kg, he defeated the hometown favourite Trinity Cameron in a points decision.

He won all the rounds from the judges and stunned the home crowd to claim gold.

"It was hard but I still fought back and won," Russell said.

"I listened to my coach and did what he said.

"I just ran and I moved my head."

Russell's coach and his father Dan agreed and said it was a hard fight, despite the judges' outcome.

"It wasn't an easy fight; he had to really fight," he said.

"But he's certainly made up for not competing at the recent Australian titles. …
