Cadet Honours His Unit; David Plans Long Career in Defence

DAVID Neilson owes a great deal of his preparation for a career in the armed forces to his time in the 13 Army Cadet Unit, so he decided to give something back.

The former Toowoomba teenager and student at the prestigious Australian Defence Force Academy presented his old unit with a ceremonial sword to thank them for five years of discipline, team work and fun.

Cadet Officer Neilson's father Greg said his son, who reached the rank of Cadet Under Officer and was second in command of the unit before he departed, loved his time training at the Milne Bay Depot in Harristown last year.

"David had heard from his brother and also from other youths who were participating about how much fun cadets were and the adventure activities," he

"It has a range of adventure activities that teach skills like camping, radio skills, climbing, marching, drilling and personal discipline.

"It's an opportunity to meet children from a range of different schools, (and) he maintains friendships with other former cadets of 13ACU. …
