Teesside Championships Are a Massive Success; RELIEF AFTER MOVE FROM GATESHEAD

THE tough decision to move the North East Counties Track and Field Championships to Teesside proved to be a huge success.

Helped by good weather conditions on both days, the championships, which had been held at Gateshead International Stadium every May for the past two decades, linked up with Middlesbrough Sports Village for the very first time.

And the venue's debut as hosts to the top North East athletics fixture delighted both athletes and supporters alike with the numbers of spectators peaking at around 600 at major times of the programme.

It was to be a decision switch GATESHEAD Championship secretary Keith Willshire was a relieved man at the end of two exhausting days but he was in a joyful mood after the final medal presentation was over and everyone had departed the stadium.

Keith "It was always going to be a contentious decision for some to switch the championships from Gateshead to Middlesbrough,'' said Willshire.

"Certainly, we have enjoyed working with everyone at the International Stadium over many years but it was felt that Teesside should once again be given its chance to host the championships especially now that they have a new complex.

"A number of years ago the championships contentious for some to from to Middlesbrough,'' shire were held on a rota, two years at Gateshead then one year at the old Clairville Stadium in Middlesbrough but then Gateshead became our 'home' every year.

"However, once the impressive new Sports Village came on stream it was many people's opinion that we should switch to Middlesbrough this year and it certainly was a good decision.

"Yes, we had a few teething troubles, especially on the first day when we unfortunately fell behind time due to all of the hurdle races, but we quickly managed to catch up before the end of the day. …
