Margaret's on a Winner with Her Silkies

CHICKEN breeder Margaret Aitken reckons she will pluck a winner with her Silkie entries at this year's Fraser Coast Show.

Born and bred in Maryborough, Margaret has won many a first, second and reserve over the years.

It wasn't until she met her husband Bert that she fell in love with chooks.

"When we were kids we had chooks but not show chooks.

"Bert and I would show our chooks at the old showgrounds, where Bolton Clarke Chelsea is, in the fifties.

"We were winners."

After Bert passed from cancer Margaret stopped attending the show until in 1980 when the show moved out to the highway.

"I started breeding and showing my chooks again and a poultry club was started.

"That's when I really got into it.

"I love my chooks - I would be lost without them."

Margaret enters different breeds into other shows around the region including Biggenden.

"These breeds - Buff, Silkie, Pekin - and my roosters aren't hard to look after," she said. …
