THE state LNP was reeling last week after the resignations of two powerful North Queensland members and a poll jolt that put the party in a losing position for the next election.

The resignations came from the former Herbert MP Peter Lindsay and Richmond Mayor John Wharton.

Mr Lindsay, who resigned on Wednesday, held the seat of Herbert for 14 years, winning five consecutive elections.

Before that he had won five back-to-back elections for the LNP on the Townsville City Council. His resignation was followed by Cr Wharton's on Thursday.

Cr Wharton, who has been Mayor of the Richmond shire since 1997, is a close political ally of the Minister for Resources and Northern Australia, Matt Canavan, and former deputy prime minister Barnaby Joyce,

Both men ran afoul of the party's Queensland hierarchy in December after criticising its poor performance in the November 2017 state election. Both Cr Wharton and Mr Lindsay were suspended from the LNP for their criticisms. …
