Virtual GPs Prove a Success So Far

THE introduction of online health consultations on Teesside are so far proving a success, a doctor has said.

NHS England is planning to roll out the service to allow people to seek help from their GP digitally.

In most virtual surgery systems, a patient answers questions online and their case is reviewed by a GP who decides what action to take. A public consultation on the idea is being carried out nationwide and will end in June.

Dr Saleem Hassan gave an update on the system's use locally to the governing body of Darlington CCG (Clinical Commissioning Group) and Hartlepool and Stockton CCGs on Tuesday.

He told the panel how the promotion of "e-consultations" at practices had been carried out for a number of months and had "seemed quite popular".

"The majority of patients do not actually need to be seen by doctors - they just need appropriate advice," said Dr Hassan. "It allows us not to have to call them up and bring them into the surgery. …
