WHAT'S ON: A record number of entry events has seen the Mackay Marina run bounce-back to numbers not seen since the days of the mining boom.

Celebrating it's tenth year on Sunday, Marina Run committee member Alan Zamparutti said renewed interest would see thousands pounding the pavement across half marathon, 8km, 5km, Corporate Challenge and 3km Junior Dash courses.

"The numbers are up on the climb, we're getting up into record numbers with 3100 now," he said.

"It got higher in the peak of the mining boom, but now we're back."

Zamparutti said the most popular event would be the 5km fun run, with almost 400 entrants, but over 300 entrants would be competing in the half marathon and 8km run respectively.

"There's also 70 Corporate Challenge teams (registered) and we had 45 last year... most teams will be between six-10 members, so it's likely there could be 700 people just in the corporate event."

Zamparutti said the flat nature of the course and surrounds of the Marina and Blue Water Quay was a signature of the event which made it so popular, while the half-marathon catered to elite competitors looking to test themselves. …
