Winter is upon us, so the casual beer drinker's thoughts begin to turn to the dark side. I have always thought the upside of chilly mornings, westerly winds and long nights is that it is the perfect time to enjoy a rich malty beverage or two, plus a port before retiring to help one's sleep.

Hugh the Neighbour and I stumbled across Coopers Dark Ale while browsing in our local Chapel of St Daniels and, even though it has been around for a number of years, neither of us had tried it.

It must be said that HTN is not a fan of Coopers products, so there was an element of scepticism in his approach to this brew.

Coopers is well known as the pride of South Australia and is the largest privately owned brewery in Australia. A family company, they pride themselves on not only their products but on their approach to business, community and their heritage. …
