A BLIND date led to a hugely successful relationship for a local power couple.

Annabel and Ben Dolphin had a myriad of careers and travelled extensively before settling in Mackay with their young family.

Twelve years after they met, Ben, now 43, and Annabel, 37, have had successful careers right across the board, but their latest endeavour is Mackay's two branches of Helloworld.

"We met many years ago when we were both working in mining when I was working down at Middlemount, I was at Anglo American Coal and Annabel was at BHP," Mr Dolphin said.

"We got introduced by an old family friend of my parents' in Mt Isa."

The two went on a blind date, and in an unusual bout of success for the dating method, hit it off back in 2005. The rest has just been history.

Mrs Dolphin laughs about their age difference, when they were younger people would assume Ben was the younger of the pair.

It's almost 10 years ago they came to Mackay from Melbourne, forsaking big city life for their family and more passion-oriented careers.

"About that time I stepped away from mining and started consulting. That was growing and becoming successful, and Ben had an opportunity to step out of mining and into photography," Mrs Dolphin said.

"We thought with three young kids we'd move out of mining."

They now have three young kids, Max, Amelia and Eva, happily settled in Mackay. Ben took up photography and made a crust from it while Annabel did a lot of business consulting work.

"I was consulting and doing a lot of business, and business consulting and got on a few boards. I thought coming back to Mackay was very much about coming back to family, my parents are here and it was about having that family and support around us," Mrs Dolphin said.

"I started working with the Helloworld team about four years ago on strategy and their advisory board, then one thing led to another. …
