WINNER Houghton International HOUGHTON International improves the performance of electro mechanical assets around the world, offering a repair and maintenance service for motors, generators, pumps and all electrical rotating equipment.

Last year the company overhauled its HR&D function and launched its People Strategy to help it reach its PS20m revenue goal by 2020.

Many changes took place to improve and embed HR&D processes across the business, including the introduction of a new computerised system to replace a paper-based one, a competency management system with job descriptions and skills matrices, and a salary banding to ensure fairness.

A new benefits package and integrated health surveillance and fitness for work program including annual health surveillance checks were also introduced. Internal communications kept employees informed via a quarterly newsletter and health and safety update, and quarterly meetings.

Pamela Lamming, HR director said: "At Houghton International 'everyone matters', so the development and implementation of our People Strategy was key to improving and embedding our HR&D processes.

"To win the CIPD HR&D Excellence in SMEs award recognising the impact the HR team has had on the business is fantastic. We were delighted to be shortlisted against such great North East companies so to win was the icing on the cake."
