EMERGING exhausted and dishevelled onto the New Zealand shore, Scott Donaldson said he was "absolutely knackered" - a succinct statement from the Coffs resident who had just paddled more than 2200km.

The 48-year-old father made landfall at Ngamotu Beach, New Plymouth, on Monday night after a total of 62 days at sea, becoming the first person to kayak solo across the Tasman Sea.

Donaldson stumbled ashore, flanked by wife Sarah and son Zac, to a display of fireworks and applause from crowds who gathered to greet him after his history-making voyage.

"We've invested everything into this - financial, emotional, just everything," wife Sarah told New Zealand media.

Donaldson left from Jetty Beach on May 2, reaching Lord Howe Island 10 days later. He resumed his journey on May 18, paddling up to 16 hours a day.

He encountered sharks, fierce lightning storms and waves of up to 6m in his epic journey. …
