I've Hounded My Wife to Move Up

Article excerpt

COMEDIAN, actor and TV host Rufus Hound is heading to Newcastle with Dusty the Musical. It tells the story of singer Dusty Springfield and sees Rufus as her manager Vic Billings. Katherine Kingsley takes the title role, singing many of the star's greatest hits including I Only Want To Be with You, Son of A Preacher Man and You Don't Have To Say You Love Me.

Rufus has hosted Glastonbury coverage, been a regular on panel shows Never Mind the Buzzcocks and Celebrity Juice, presented Outtake TV on BBC1, and won Let's Dance for Sport Relief, dancing to Cheryl's Fight For This Love. He played Francis Henshall in One Man, Two Guvnors, on tour and in the West End.

Do you have any connections to the North East? All of my Nan's family are from Newcastle and Middlesbrough so I always feel warm and fuzzy hearing the North Eastern brogue. I was last on tour in Newcastle about four years ago and loved it so much I tried to convince my wife to move up. Spoiler: she said no. It is - let's be honest - flippin' miles away. Not so bad for me, because when I'm working I'm just gone, but for getting friends and family up to stay or vice versa, it's a heck of a mission.

Are you looking forward to your visit? Yeah, been before and love it.

Last time I was up the council had just announced a 100% cut to the arts budget, so it'll be interesting to see what a knock-on that's had. I'm looking forward to visiting the Steam Baths (if the council hasn't sold them off) particularly. Also, my favourite nightclub I have ever been to is in Newcastle - Curtis Mayfield House - so I'll definitely be heading there at some stage. Can you do a Geordie accent? I divven' na.

What's the best thing about this show? Kat Kingsley as Dusty is fantastic. She's been nominated for heaps of awards and I've worked with her a few times. She's sensational and people are going to totally fall in love with her voice. …
