Best large company: Ubisoft Reflections The multi-national computer games company offers comprehensive development programmes for all employees, an array of staff benefits and a real commitment to work-life balance. It is one of the main backers of the North East Futures UTC and has given staff time to volunteer at the Great Exhibition of the North.

(Finalists: Connect Health, Eversheds Sutherland (International) LLP, Home Group; Ubisoft CRC) Best medium company: Muckle LLP Law firm Muckle has a range of official accreditations that show how much it cares about its staff. It has a welldeveloped staff training programme and believes its role in the community is a key part of its day-to-day work.

(Finalists: Houghton International, Miller Homes North East, Queensway Dental, Waterstons) Best small company: O Communications The Newcastle communications agency has its own in-house training school, and has been an active participant in the North East Better Health at Work Award. It has a range of policies to ensure staff engagement and has based a move to new premises around meeting as many staff needs as possible.

(Finalists: Blissful Futures, Carney Consultancy, Hoults Ltd, TSG Marine) Best not-for-profit company: Gateshead College Boasting numerous accreditations, Gateshead College has maintained spending on staff development despite cuts in the further education sector. It works extensively with community groups in the town and offers perks to staff that include added holidays, an on-site gym and free courses.

(Finalists: Northumbria University, Carers Trust Tyne and Wear) Best community involvement: Egger UK Egger backs charities that include Northumbria Blood Bikes, Sport Tynedale and Hexham Cubs and Brownies. Through its work with the North East STEM consortium it also has one of the region's best apprenticeship programmes and provides a bursary each year to put a young person through university. …
