Newcastle Make a Plea for Alassane

NEWCASTLE United target Alassane Plea has returned to Nice for pre-season training as the Magpies continue discussions with the Ligue 1 club over a potential club-record transfer.

It is understood Newcastle had an initial bid rejected for the 25-year-old striker, who Nice value at around PS27million, and who netted 21 goals last term.

However, United have not yet given up hope of reaching an agreement for Plea - despite rival interest from West Ham United, Fulham, Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Monchengladbach - with a source in France confirming the forward would be keen to move to Tyneside to work with Rafa Benitez.

Yet Magpie fans are understandably sceptical about Newcastle's latest approach for a big-money striker, given previous failed pursuits of the likes of Nicolai Jorgensen, Saido Berahino and Alexandre Lacazette - and it remains to be seen whether United do have the finances to pull off such a deal.

The 20 per cent sell-on fee which Plea's former club Lyon is entitled to is also complicating matters. …
