Whitney Cert 15, 120 mins SINGER Whitney Houston and designer Alexander McQueen may seem like creatures from different planets she put a smile on the face of Reagan's America; he was selfconsciously dark. But their stories have some electrifying similarities.

As Kevin Macdonald's documentary makes clear, the young Houston was born into a beleaguered, workingclass community and surrounded by homophobia. The film's big revelation is that she was also the victim of sexual abuse (it's claimed that, between the ages of seven and nine, Houston was molested by her cousin, Dee Dee Warwick). Like McQueen, Houston never lived a charmed life.

Macdonald, who suspected Houston had been abused, got people to discuss it, on record, only at the last minute. Though some of the new information feels half-digested, it's still incredible that the family opened up to a Scottish outsider.

Last year Nick Broomfield's Whitney: Can I Be Me painted Houston's family as hugely dysfunctional and her assistant and some-time lover, Robyn Crawford, as her one true soulmate. …
