AS Donna Spence and Graham Oliver discovered, you don't get much closer to nature than their five-bedroom treetop property.

For the past 14 years The Thruff - which has as its focal point a 400-plus year old windmill - has been home.

Located within Dipton Mill, just 1.5 miles from Hexham, it sits in a picture postcard perfect 1.23 acre plot.

But its spectacular treetop position is only the start for Donna and Graham.

It has sumptuous lawns, a patio area that overlooks woodland gardens, pond and stream. There's even a studio building, complete with wood-burning stove, toilet and hot running water, "What attracted us to the property was that it is completely unique and a one-off," explained Donna.

"We have brought our family up here. Its location allowed us to bring our children up to enjoy the natural surroundings, which encourages lovely, down-to-earth values and the opportunity to spend quality time together enjoying the outdoors. We have a large pond and the children are always out and about enjoying a healthy and outdoor childhood.

"The home itself is very versatile and offers myself, my husband, two children and my Mam a more than comfortable amount of space. It is a wonderful characterful building, with a fantastic amount of light and big windows which allow you to enjoy the surrounding skies and nature. Our favourite features are the location, the breath-taking views, and our treetop position. We are only a mile and half outside of Hexham, so it gives us the opportunity to visit the town but also the opportunity to enjoy a private, relaxing and secluded lifestyle."

At the heart of the couple's handsome pile is the windmill itself. Beautifully restored - with east and west wings forking from it - it has a double bedroom on the first floor as well as a study and bathroom on the second. …
