A PROPOSED health hub worth up to $7 million to Mackay's economy has been rejected by the council, for now.

The Eastbrooke Medical Centre was to be built at 8-10 Nebo Rd in West Mackay.

It would include a medical centre, dispensing pharmacy and allied health services like physiotherapists and dentists.

Mayor Greg Williamson said councillors unanimously rejected the development application based on eight "solid good planning" reasons and encouraged the developer to find a better site.

The project's fatal flaw was that it would be built below flood levels.

"Council wasn't against the medical facility being in our region at all... but we just could not approve this purely on planning grounds," he said.

"You can't build below flood levels, you can't ask us to build below flood levels."

Eastbrooke Medical Centres is an 11-year-old Sydney-based company that has two existing clinics in Mackay and others across Australia. …
