Whincup Applauds Retiring Lowndes

SUPERCARS: After years of working with and battling against Queensland icon Craig Lowndes, Supercars supremo Jamie Whincup respected his teammate's latest decision.

The high-achieving Lowndes will push his Commodore to the limit for the final time on his own at Queensland Raceway this weekend after announcing his retirement from full-time racing.

Back in Ipswich preparing for his next racing mission, Red Bull Holden Racing Team driver Whincup offered some timely views into the mindset of elite sportsmen.

"All good things come to an end of course and I've been very lucky to be his teammate for the last 12 years,'' Whincup said of Lowndes.

"He's a character.

"He's not going anywhere though. He's got a TV deal (with Fox Sports) so he'll be around the category and he'll certainly be helping us out as a team as well and be involved in endurance racing.

"And that's the good part about our sport. There's big issues when you go cold turkey.

"We've seen athletes retire and get into plenty of trouble in the past so the good news in our sport is you can still do the endurance races (over longer distances where co-drivers are needed). You can still be involved and wind down so to speak rather than just go cold turkey.''

Under Lowndes' new arrangement, Whincup welcomed the opportunity to have the Supercars great as a co-driver next season.

Enjoying a more relaxed interaction opportunity with fans in Ipswich, defending champion Whincup planned to continue his Supercars career for some time to come.

Whincup looked every bit like a seasoned competitor hungry to build on his seven Supercars championship titles and 111 race wins.

"I'm going to go a bit longer,'' Whincup said.

"I don't have a plan on my future but one thing I have always said is I won't go past my use-by date. …
