WHEN Julie Mordey started working at St Patrick's RC Primary School back in September 1976, things were very different.

There were no blackboards or whiteboards, not a lot of outside equipment and children heading into the early years part of the school would come straight from home into education.

Fast forward to 2018 and schools are almost unrecognisable.

Julie, 60, from Middlesbrough said: "The actual basics haven't really changed. We have a lot more outside equipment now.

"We didn't have much outside equipment. We didn't have a whiteboard or a blackboard. Children have a lot more opportunity now to access the internet.

"I don't think the children themselves have changed. When I started the children came straight from the home. Now there's places, there's much more private settings."

But one thing has remained constant. Julie said: "The children have always been the centre of the school."

Working at the school as a nursery nurse was Julie's first and only job. And now, after working across the foundation stages in nursery and reception, the bell has finally rung for Mrs Mordey. …
