Where Have All the Taxis Gone?

AS someone who has worked in Newcastle for over 40 years I take a keen interest in what is going on in the City. The other week, coming into the City via Central Station I decided to walk up to the City centre to see what preparations were in place for the Great Exhibition of the North. However it was a hot day and by the time I got to the top of Grey Street I decided I needed to get a taxi to get me to my destination.

I then realised that I had no idea where to pick up a taxi and looking around I could see no signs indicating where I might find a taxi rank, nor could I see any lines of taxis waiting for potential passengers. Needless to say I just continued on foot, and walking right across the City still didn't come across a taxi rank.

As someone who knows the City relatively well I am concerned that visitors to the City and other elderly and/or disabled people may have similar difficulty in finding a taxi when they need one and thus may simply decide not to come into the City at all. …
