It isn't just for those who fail to get their grades, it is also for anyone who wants to go to university but missed out on applying.

If you've changed your mind about what you want to study or where, or have only just decided to apply for the first time, you could be one of the 60,000-plus students who secure a place at university through Clearing.

To avoid a panic it is best to be prepared. Follow these insightful tips from Subi Darbhanga, Head of Academic Services at London Met, who has years of experience dealing with applicants.

HAVE A BACK-UP PLAN Have one or two alternative courses in mind even if you're confident about your results. That way you won't have to do lots of last-minute research into other courses.

YOU WILL NEED TO BE QUICK You might be surprised at the calibre of courses available through Clearing but they do fill up fast.

KEEP TRYING Don't give up if the first few universities you call don't work out. A bit of persistence pays off.

ASK FOR HELP At London Met, like most universities, we have experienced staff who are ready and willing to advise and guide you through the process, so there's no need to worry. You can look closer to home too. Your teacher or form tutor, friends and family can all provide you with different types of support.

NOT USED UCAS? This isn't a problem. We get lots of enquiries via Clearing from people that haven't applied through UCAS for a university place.

Niki Chesworth HOW TO CHOOSE A UNIVERSITY DO YOUR research now so that you're prepared for tomorrow. This is worth doing even if you get the grades you need. It can help you to confirm that you have chosen the right course and the right university.
