I WAS recently given a petrol electric hybrid courtesy car while my MG was in the body shop for minor accident repair.

Oh great, I thought - a chance to try out a much-hyped vehicle.

On leaving the MG dealer the petrol gauge read almost empty and only a small amount of charge was showing on the battery gauge. Never mind I thought and made my way to the nearest petrol station and topped up the tank to about half full, feeling confident that I would have plenty of fuel to get me home - a distance of 22 miles.

I couldn't believe how quickly the petrol gauge went down and how little charge was generated on my journey home. Thinking that I could plug in to my domestic electric supply, it soon became obvious that by doing so would create a serious safety hazard as I would have to feed my extention over the pavement. …
