Neighbors Working Together Some in Sandalwood Want to Form Association

After cleaning up their neighborhood as part of JaxPride week in February, some Sandalwood residents have become inspired and hope to establish a homeowners association.

Resident Maureen Wilson said more than 500 fliers were handed out to residents in February to see if there was an interest in forming an association. Forty residents have already shown support, she said, adding that 100 fliers also were distributed to area schools and businesses.

"We want people to know that we care about our neighborhood," Wilson said. "I would like to have an old-fashioned neighborhood where people watched out for each other."

More than 500 homes are in the Sandalwood community, around at Atlantic Boulevard and St. Johns Bluff Road.

The concrete block homes were built in the early 1960s and range in price from $40,000 to $70,000, according to Wilson.

By establishing a homeowners association, a community can pass bylaws that must be followed by homeowners. Formation also protects the community from lawsuits and gives it power to put a lien on the home of a resident who does not conform to the rules. Homeowners vote on the laws they wish to adopt, then elected board members to see that they are followed.

During JaxPride week, several residents volunteered their time trimming bushes and trees and mowing and edging median islands in the development's main thoroughfares. The clean-up produced eight truckloads and 50 bags of trash and clippings, Wilson said.

Pat Atwood said she has lived in the Sandalwood community for 12 years and would like to see residents work together to improve the neighborhood.

"We have lived here a long time, and we wanted to make things better and improve the property values and the area," she said.

Atwood said Sandalwood is in a good location, and that she is fortunate enough to have her sister-in-law living next door and her father-in-law across the street.

"We are happy here," she said. "It is close to the beach and town. …
