Storms Hurt at Least 24 Twisters Slice through Dooly, Candler Counties

VIENNA -- Tornados ripped through middle Georgia yesterday, injuring at least two dozen people in two counties and destroying several businesses and homes.

The first tornado touched down in Dooly County shortly after 10:30 a.m., causing extensive damage in downtown Vienna, according to the Georgia Emergency Management Agency. No fatalities were immediately reported.

Kent McMackin of Dooly Medical Center told WXIA-TV in Atlanta they were treating 25 to 30 people, most of whom were hit by flying debris, road signs and glass. Some suffered broken bones.

At least two other people were injured in Candler County in east-central Georgia when a tornado hit an area north of Metter, about 60 miles west of Savannah, at about 1 p.m.

The storms ripped roofs off businesses and homes, destroying some, and knocked down trees and power lines in downtown Dooly County.

Gov. Roy Barnes declared a state of emergency in Vienna, a town of 2,700 people located about 50 miles south of Macon. …
