Democrats Give Support to Republican

Article excerpt

The City Council District 4 runoff between Democrat Suzanne Jenkins and Republican Gary Dickinson is about to take a twist.

All three Democrats knocked out of the race in the April 13 election are talking about endorsing the Republican in the runoff.

Alan Mosley and Allen Carter say they will endorse Dickinson, while Moses Henry says he's seriously considering it.

"It's America. They have right to support any candidate they'd like to," Jenkins says.

Mosley, who is expected to make an announcement as early as tomorrow, says Dickinson's approach to government is more in line with his own.

"My message was definitely a conservative message, and so was his," Mosley says.

Carter, who describes himself as a conservative, also says Dickinson's views are more in line with his.

"He has a broader base plan of what he wants to do for the district than Mrs. Jenkins," Carter says.

Carter, who finished last in the five candidate race, says he has no plans to make a formal announcement but will if Dickinson requests it.

"I got 334 votes," he says. "I can't help him a lot."

Mosley's endorsement could help more. He finished third in the race with 1,441 votes, or 21 percent.

"I know lots of people voted for Allen because he's from their neighborhood," Jenkins says. "I don't know if they'll follow him to the Dickinson camp with their votes."

Jenkins finished first in the April 13 election with 2,456 votes, or 36 percent.

Dickinson finished second with 1,910 votes, or 28 percent.

"The last time I did it with a cell phone and $22,000 against four opponents," Jenkins says. "And we're going to do it again."

To do that in the runoff, Jenkins will have to hang on to the votes she got and pick up another 14 percent of the vote.

Democrats outnumber Republicans in District 4 by about 2,000 voters, but voters in the district have sided with GOP candidates in the past. Mayor John Delaney won the district against Democrat Jake Godbold in 1995 with 60 percent of the vote. …
