Apaches Earn Return Trip to Final Four

Its pitching might not have been the sharpest it has been all year, but Arlington Country Day's hitting was, and the result is a trip to Tampa and the state final four.

The Apaches (19-7) scored runs in five of seven innings as they upended host Monticello Aucilla Christian Academy 12-6 yesterday in the Class A regional final. Arlington Country Day will play Miami Northwest Christian -- a 7-3 winner over Bradenton Christian -- Monday at Legends Field.

For the Apaches, it is their second final four appearance the last three years.

The trip to Tampa wouldn't be possible if not for an offense that pounded out 13 hits.

"We hit the ball well today," Arlington coach Burt Pierce said. "We were sharp . . . Our bats really came through for us."

Leading the offense was third basemen Jay Drayton and catcher Zach Retzer, who each had a double and a home run. Including their regional semifinal game against First Academy, the pair have combined for five home runs in two games. …
