Sarazen's Shot Was Masterful, but One Really Cool Event Tops It

Article excerpt

Running off at the typewriter. . . .

Gene Sarazen holing a 235-yarder for a double-eagle at the 1935 Masters remains the second-most wondrous event to ever take place on the golf course. No. 1, as always, is the sight of a fast-approaching beer cart. . . . And is it just a coincidence that Sarazen, the beloved golfing purist and historian, died a few days after ABC announced the farcical David Duval-Tiger Woods made-for-TV exhibition? Useless trivia: In hitting those six homers in one game, McDougall ran 2,160 feet -- 2/5 ths of a mile -- just jogging around the basepaths. . . . In three games with the Barcelona Dragons of the NFL European League, Lawrence Phillips has a league-leading 382 rushing yards, four touchdowns and no international incidents. . . . Yevgeny Kafelnikov is the No. 1 men's tennis player in the world. Yes, that Yevgeny Kafelnikov. . . . …
