Charlton Hearing Postponed Fired Assessors Remain for Now

FOLKSTON -- A hearing scheduled for tomorrow to determine whether two Charlton County Board of Assessors members stay on the job has been postponed.

The delay will extend a temporary court order issued last month, which forced Charlton County commissioners to reinstate Lawanda Jones and Guy Gowen to the Board of Assessors.

County commissioners fired Gowen and Jones by a 3-2 vote at a special meeting April 12, saying the two failed to meet the July 1 deadline to file last year's tax digest -- a list of all the properties in the county that could be taxed.

All the board members, with the exception of chairman Bud Morris, were asked to resign in January.

Chandler Crumbley quit that month and Richard Taylor was not reappointed when his six-year term expired in March.

Morris was not asked to quit because he was not appointed to the board until last fall, after the late digest was filed. But Morris turned in his resignation May 13 because of disagreements with one of the new board members. …
