Evans Bowls Perfect Game No. 20

Article excerpt

Greg Evans recently added another 300 game to his accomplishments in the Greater Jax Handicap League at Phoenix Lanes. Evans, now with 20 perfect games, started the night with games of 234 and 235.

In the final game, Evans got a break in the third frame. "I took it one ball at a time," he said.

With the 300 game, Evans finished the night with a 769 series.

Evans had held the city series record before Ariel Sarroca tied him at 857, which was later erased by Jamie Cruz's 874. That record was subsequently wiped out by Wally Thompson, when he set the city and state record in March of 1997 at 879.

Evans bowls in three leagues and carries a composite 223 average. In addition to his 20 perfect games, Evans has nine 800 series, five 299 games and a pair of 298 games.

BOYD ROLLS FIRST 300 -- Carl Boyd rolled his first perfect game recently in the Atlantic Juicers League at Jax Lanes West.

After struggling somewhat in the first two games, the right-hander changed his line en route to the 300 game.

Entering the final frame, Boyd just wanted to make good shots. He got a break on the first shot in the 10th frame when he missed his target and the ball went to the Brooklyn side of the headpin for the strike.

The eight-year veteran was able to relax and flush the pocket with the final two shots for the strikes and the 300 game. He finished with a 642 series.

Boyd also has a pair of 299 games and a high series of 745. He bowled in three leagues this year and carried a 198 average. In addition to the 300 award he will receive from ABC, he also earned the Century Award, which is a watch awarded for 100 pins over a single game average.

SCORE WHEN IT COUNTS -- Jeff Borg has two 700 series during his eight years of bowling. This may not seem like the highlight of a bowler's career, but both of the 700 series came in tournaments.

Borg posted a career-high scratch series of 758 in the singles event of the 1999 Florida State Bowling Association Tournament in Daytona Beach. He is in sixth place at the tournament. His series total, including handicap, gives him an 801.

The right-hander's other 700 series came two years ago, also in the singles event of the Florida State Bowling Association Tournament. In that tournament, he finished in 27th place in the singles event.

In this years tournament, his 758 series included games of 267 and 266, personal bests for Borg. He bowled in one league this year and averaged a 190 in the Inter City Men's League at Jax Lanes Grove Park.
