How do you set realistic timemanagement goals?

Ask Women Business Owners of North Florida, whose members recently debated the challenge.

"Does anyone not have a problem with that?" asked Kerstin Chelius, a Women Business Owners of North Florida member who led a roundtable discussion about it.

Member Roberta Lucas had a suggestion to manage time. "Say no."

"You can't do that," said Chelius, "Yes you can," Lucas responded.

More than a dozen WBO members talked about time-management and how work, family, civic, professional and spiritual obligations and needs all need attention.

Not to mention personal time.

Debbie Frame, who coaches people for a living, advises people to orient their goals to their personal values, "They feel they have to overpromise and overextend. But they have nothing left for themselves," she said.

Among the group's suggestions:

Don't waste time or effort. "Life is too short," said Lucas of the J. Lucas & Associates civil engineering firm. Decide what's important and don't overextend. "You work yourself to the bone -- and for what?" she asked.

Only accept volunteer jobs that need your skills. "I ask -- will I really be of help, or be just another person?" said REM Design president Donna Ruppel. …
