TEXAS ESCAPEE FOUND HIDING NAKED IN A TREE

HUNTSVILLE, Texas -- A killer who broke out of the state's most secure prison and fled naked into the surrounding snake- and alligator-infested swamps was captured yesterday, hiding in a tree.

Clifford Jones, 33, offered no resistance and was returned to prison for arraignment on escape charges. He never made it off the grounds.

Jones, serving 26 years for murder, the attempted murder of a Dallas police officer and assaulting a guard, had been the object of an intense manhunt since he fled Sunday from the high-security prison.

FATHER SENTENCED IN POLYGAMY CASE

BRIGHAM CITY, Utah -- A man accused of whipping his 16-year-old daughter for fleeing an arranged, polygamous marriage to her uncle was sentenced to seven months in jail yesterday for child abuse.

John Daniel Kingston, 43, could have gotten five years in prison.

The girl said her father arranged for her to become the 15th wife of his brother, David Ortell Kingston. She testified that she counted 28 lashes from her father's belt before she passed out.

The uncle was convicted June 3 of incest and will be sentenced July 9.

ALBRIGHT SWEARS IN GAY AMBASSADOR

WASHINGTON -- With Secretary of State Madeleine Albright presiding, James Hormel, a gay San Francisco businessman and wealthy Democratic Party donor, was sworn in yesterday as U.S. ambassador to Luxembourg.

He became the nation's first openly gay ambassador.

Protesters marched outside as Hormel, an heir to the Hormel Meat Co. fortune, took the oath.

GORE SEEKS UNION VOTE DURING FLORIDA VISIT

MIAMI BEACH -- Vice President Al Gore stopped between campaign fund-raisers to make an appeal to union workers yesterday, vowing to make sure Medicare is "never weakened, never looted."

Gore congratulated the 2000 members of the Union of Needletrades, Industrial and Textile Employees on their membership gains and ran through a list of issues designed to appeal to workers. …
