The Georgia Tech football program has received an oral commitment from Bolles tight end Jonathan Jackson (6 feet 2, 215 pounds). Jackson is one of several college prospects among Bolles' senior class, including quarterback Travis Thurmond and safety Mark Dorsey.

"If football doesn't work out, I'll always have a degree from a great engineering program," said Jackson, who will study aerospace engineering. "That was a big reason I chose there."

Jackson averaged nearly 28 yards per catch during the regular season last year (10 receptions, 278 yards, three TD). He said his commitment is firm but he likely will take a few official visits, possibly to Ohio State, FSU or Georgia.

"He is an excellent athlete and student," Bolles coach Corky Rogers said of Jackson. "He can block very well, and I would hope we'll be able to throw more passes his way this year than we did last year."

Jackson, who is expected to easily meet academic standards for freshman eligibility, is Georgia Tech's first oral commitment. …
