Close-Knit Teaching Team Breaking Up Winning Act

Carol Klein and Lindsay Henderson have several things in common.

Not only have they taught at the same Clay County schools for 12 years, they also were both teacher of the year at the same school, Fleming Island Elementary.

But that's not all. They are also mother and daughter.

"It has been just thrilling to work with my daughter," said Klein, who has taught in Clay County for 21 years. "If we've learned anything from each other over the last 12 years it's that all children are lovable and teachable and it's up to us to find the right way to do it."

The pairing has come to an end, however, as Klein retired at the end of the last school year.

"We have watched each other teach and gained a lot of ideas from each other," Klein said. "But one thing we have learned from each other is that all children are lovable and teachable it is just up to us to find a way to do it.

"Retiring was a hard decision, but I will be 62 years old in October, so my husband and I are going to travel and do some fun things together."

Henderson, who said she has always wanted to teach, was very proud to have followed in her mother's footsteps.

"Working with my mom has been a joy because she has been my inspiration my whole life," she said.

Even with Klein's retirement, there are still family ties at Fleming Island Elementary for Henderson. Her two daughters, Ashton and Amanda, attend the school.

She hopes she will be able to pass on the love of learning to her daughters through her actions, as her mother did for her.

Klein received the teacher of the year award in the 1998-99 school year while her daughter received it in the 1996-97 term.

"These two are a gift to their profession," said Tom Ramsey, principal at Fleming Island Elementary. "Working with them has been one of the highlights of my career and I'm very sad to see Carol go."

Klein began her Clay County teaching career at Grove Park Elementary in 1974 and two years later moved to Lakeside Elementary. …
