Florida Men Detained by Cuba

HAVANA -- Cuban authorities have detained four men from Florida after their two speedboats were intercepted in the latest arrests of suspected smugglers, official news media reported yesterday.

The men were arrested off the Cuban coast about an hour apart Wednesday at two locations in the western province of Pinar del Rio, the Communist daily Granma reported.

The arrests bring to 30 the number of U.S. residents held by the Cuban government on charges of smuggling emigrants from Cuba's shores.

The U.S. State Department did not have immediate comment on the latest detentions.

The men were identified as Arsenio Garcia Fernandez, who left Cuba in May; and Denis Agepcis Bravo Fuentes, Hector Luis Gonzalez Costa and Roberto Morales Gonzalez, who left Cuba in 1993.

In Miami, Barbara Morales, wife of one of the jailed men, said the boaters were on a fishing trip.

In Cuba, Granma said that 19 people, including 11 women and five children, were found on the shore at the time of the arrests. …
