Blue Jays' Winning Streak Ends

When the West Duval Youth Association Blue Jays lost the girls' softball Tadpole Division County Championships last month to the River City Lady Jags, it wasn't because they did not have the experience to handle the big-game pressure.

Coached by 23-year veteran and Westside legend Scotty Bare, the Blue Jays have earned six county championships and runner-up finishes, 12 division titles and five straight trips to the finals. This year was their third undefeated regular season to go with 53 consecutive wins and 1997 and '98 county championships.

"They get out there, they practice hard, and they've got that Blue Jay pride," Bare said. "They've got that confidence that when they hit the field. ... They play really well together."

After clinching the division title this year, the Jays played eight games over three days at the county tournament in pursuit of a three-peat.

They began the tourney by trouncing the Maxville Alleycats 20-8.

The next morning the Jays' winning streak came to a halt against the Lady Jags and sent the Jays into the losers' bracket. …
