Bingera Drought Breaker; Stripeys in 2-0 Triumph over Brothers

FOOTBALL: The drought is over and the redemption is complete for Bingera.

The Stripeys ended 12 months of grand final pain to gain the ultimate prize in Wide Bay football.

They defeated Brothers Aston Villa 2-0 in the Wide Bay Premier League for their first title in senior men in five years.

It is their first title in the current format of the competition, with the side's last success coming in the Four Cities League, which included Gympie, in 2013.

"It feels longer than that," Bingera coach Brett Kitching said.

"As a club we spoke about a two-year plan and still got the core squad from last year.

"Now we got the depth this year with guys fit on the bench.

"Overall, it's excellent to get the win and the premiership."

The victory was set up by one goal in each half.

Bingera scored from a corner in the first eight minutes through Simon Youngberry before holding off each Villa attack until the second half.

Stripey defender Robert Cull then sealed the game with a strike in the 60th minute.

Villa had chances, including a disallowed goal not long after Cull's strike, but they were left goalless for the third time this season and for the second time against Bingera.

"We didn't play well in the first half but got the goal," Kitching said.

"They were threatening us a bit.

"We knew one goal wasn't going to win the game so we went forward."

The tactic led to the second to seal the title.

Kitching said shutting down the forward threats worked well, with the flawless performance of experienced midfielder Laurie Stephenson, who was named man of the match, helping his side to the win.

"With experience and how he controlled the match it was no wonder that he won it," Kitching said.

"Our boys stepped it up a level during the contest and we were very pleased to get it going our way on the scoreboard. …
