THIS old shop in Monument Metro station may not look like much now but it could soon be the most talked about bar in Newcastle . Plans are in the works to turn the old travel shop into a micropub called The Waypoint which, if successful, will make it the country's first underground station pub.

We've had a sneak peek at the site and had an advance look at the plans for what it could be turned into.

If the plans are approved, this real ale and music bar could be open by early 2019.

Behind the plans are the Beldon family - dad Gerry and brother and sister Sam and Aine - and award winning design firm Collective Design have been enlisted to transform the place.

Sam, 28, who will be the bar's day-to-day manager, said: "We're going for a very elegant look inside - think first class on The Orient Express.

"It's going to look very classy and we want to retain some of the classic features of Metro's distinctive design.

"The most obvious thing linking us to our surroundings will be a screen letting people know when Metros are arriving below.

"It's going to be the perfect place in Newcastle for a drink or two with friends on your way home."

The bar will revolve around a sweeping curved bar in line with the old travel shop counter and the main entrance will be at the front looking into the centre of the station.

As customers walk in, there will be a grand piano on their right for local musicians - or anyone who fancies a go - to play to customers on.

The room has a unique curved shape as it bends around the station's central pillar and there'll be fixed seating attached to that wall.

Once all the furniture is in, the bar will be able to sit around 50 people. There'll also be enough space for toilets, a staff office and a cellar. …
