Smith's Assistant Frank in the Running to Take Brentford Job

THOMAS FRANK is being considered as Dean Smith's replacement at Griffin Park.

Smith was last night appointed Aston Villa head coach, with former Chelsea captain John Terry working alongside him as his assistant at Villa Park.

The 47-year-old leaves Brentford after three years and the Championship club were today working on a succession plan following his departure.

Frank, a 45-year-old Dane who was Smith's assistant, took first-team training this morning and it is understood he is being considered for the job on a full-time basis.

Frank joined Brentford in December 2016 after a spell as manager at Danish side Brondby. After a spell in youth coaching, he took up a role with the Danish FA in 2008, working with the country's Under-16, 17 and 19 teams.

He was appointed Brondby manager in 2013 and they finished fourth and third in his two full seasons in charge.

Brentford are seventh in the Championship and one point outside the playoff places. They have looked ready to challenge for promotion to the Premier League, so the departure of Smith is a blow. But Brentford were always aware they would struggle to keep hold of Smith if a bigger club came calling and there is no panic at Griffin Park.

Brentford have coped with the sale of some of their best players in recent years and they feel the structure they have in place can help with the loss of their head coach.

Smith, who was born in the west Midlands and grew up supporting Villa, was a target for West Brom in the summer. Villa moved for Smith after Thierry Henry, Brendan Rodgers and Rui Faria, Jose Mourinho's former No2, ruled themselves out of the running for the job. Henry held talks with the club in the wake of Steve Bruce's sacking last week and was the leading candidate.

But Villa turned to Smith and made an official approach for him yesterday. …
