Fitness Student Setting Goal of 'Physical Health for All'

CQUNI Mackay student Bradley Barfield knows all too well the benefits of health-related activities for those with physical impairments.

"At nine months of age, I developed cerebral palsy through a meningitis infection," Bradley explained.

"I have had over 13 operations and procedures to improve my condition.

"Sport and exercise has always been an important part of my life and I want to help others in similar situations."

Bradley has a goal to increase physical exercise, independence and overall wellbeing for people living with a disability in Mackay.

He completed a Certificate III in Fitness earlier this year with CQUniversity, as a full-time student at the Mackay City Campus, and is now undertaking a Certificate IV in Fitness and aims to use his personal trainer qualifications to assist the disability sector.

"Providing health activities and wellness support to those in our community with disabilities can significantly improve their physical fitness, build individual social skills and independence," he said.

"I want to help facilitate and increase physical health for all to participate in everyday activities and work towards their own goals."

CQUni fitness teacher Linda Nugent said the group fitness and collaborating with medical and allied health professionals aspects of the course would greatly enhance Bradley's future employment prospects. …
