A BILLINGHAM dad-of-four suffered months of relentless neck, arm, chest and back pain, where the only way to ease the agony was to lie flat on his kitchen floor.

The "excruciating pain" left Peter Conway unsure whether he would ever work again.

The 41-year-old, father to Sam, 15, Alfie, 13, Billy, 11 and Annie, nine, said: "I live an active life at work and at home.

"I love nothing better than a kickabout with the football or going out running with my kids. I was devastated to think that doing these dayto-day things with my family could've been taken away from me forever.

"The excruciating pain meant at one point I was thinking along the lines of 'would I ever work again?' "But as a proud man and the main breadwinner in the house, my main fears turned to not being able to provide for my family, which was my worst nightmare."

However all was not lost as Peter, who works for an oil and gas terminal in Middlesbrough, was referred to the Nufffield Health Tees Hospital through a private medical insurance programme he signed up for at work.

Under the care of surgeon Mr Tai Friesem, Peter was given an MRI scan which revealed severe damage to a cervical disc in his neck.

But before surgery was considered, the consultant suggested a six to 12 week "conservative management plan," which involved prescribing pain killers and a course of intensive physiotherapy.

While Peter did experience minor improvement, the digging, twitching and aching sensations were still keeping him awake at night and meant he could only leave the house for short bursts of time.

He had to apply for sick leave from work as he found driving painful and near impossible along with doing day-to-day site tasks working on plant. After much deliberation and advice, it was decided he would undergo a cervical disc replacement. …
