'Bring Back the Death Penalty to Reduce Murders'

CAPITAL punishment should be reinstated for murderers like Ian Huntley where there is no doubt of their guilt, an outspoken councillor has said.

The death penalty was effectively abolished in the United Kingdom with the Murder (Abolition of the Death Penalty) Act 1965.

But Cllr Joan McTigue, independent councillor for Longlands and Beechwood, says crime levels since then have soared because criminals no longer fear the noose - and she says it's time the death penalty was brought back.

Cllr McTigue expressed her views after a debate erupted in the letters page of The Gazette, following no fewer than 10 murder investigations being opened by Cleveland Police so far in 2018.

In an open letter expressing her views on why capital punishment should be brought back, Cllr McTigue said: "I make no secret of the fact that I am very much in favour of it, but only for certain crimes."

Murderer Ian Huntley " The letter continued: "Over the last 20 years, we have made so much progress in forensic science, that the guilty person can be identified by so many fool-proof methods and of course there are the cases where the culprit admits their crime.

"I believe the only reason why no government has allowed the country a referendum on this subject, is because there will be an overwhelming 'yes' vote." She added she would "love to see" the results of a poll on the subject.

"That would be a good indication on the attitude of other towns on this important and sensitive subject", she said. "So far, nobody has come up with an effective alternative deterrent - have they?" Asked to elaborate, Cllr McTigue said: "When there is no doubt, such as the case of Ian Huntley who murdered those two girls in Soham, what's wrong with him being put to sleep? …
