KARTING: Moranbah Kart Club will host its first races on a re-designed track tomorrow -some 18-months after its closure.

The club, which was first opened in 1985 was said to have been in "pretty poor condition" from years of use.

Having recently finished a complete upgrade to the facilities including a new track, a new toilet block and landscaping on the grounds, the Moranbah Kart Club is ready to open its gates.

In late 2016, the club received a $100,000 funding boost towards resurfacing the kart track thanks to a Queensland Government Get Playing Places and Spaces grant.

Council injected a further $10,000 into the upgrade project via a major community grant, and as part of the vision, club president Dave Kent said planning would be about full inclusion for the community.

"As part of that we'll have an afternoon every week for kids with disabilities and their families," Kent said.

"For that we have what's called a mule, it's like a side-by-side (two seat kart), so kids who have high levels of autism that are really sensitive to sound can go for a ride with their parents, or be taken on rides around the track so they can hopefully progress to the two-speed carts by themselves."

The idea came from his partner, Alice Driver, who works at Hinterland Community Care, who opened Kent up to the struggles of caring for someone with a learning or physical disability.

"I've met a lot of kids with different disabilities and their parents and found out the difficulties and struggles they face," Kent said.

"Being out here in a mining community there isn't a whole lot the families can do. So the issue that they face (is) there really isn't much they can do where their kids can be involved or their whole family can be involved together. …
