A WOMAN smuggled five types of drugs into prison and bit a shop security guard after lunging at him with a hypodermic needle.

The security guard said he was "shocked to the core" by heroin addict Donna Carter's violence.

And he now faces a six-month wait to find out whether he has Hepatitis C after being bitten by her.

Carter, 36, faced an "inevitable" prison sentence for a string of crimes at Teesside Crown Court on Tuesday.

First she was spotted handing drugs to a prisoner at Holme House Prison in Stockton on the afternoon of February 21.

The package, found down the prisoner's trousers, included 5g of heroin, 5g of cannabis, 20g of cannabis derivative and two Class C drugs.

Carter, described as a vulnerable victim of domestic violence addicted to heroin since she was 18, said she felt in danger.

Her account - not accepted by the prosecution - was she had been given the drugs by someone she refused to name enforcing her ex-partner's debt.

She said she was instructed to pass them on to an inmate she did not know and feared the consequences of not doing so.

She went on to attack a security guard when she was caught shoplifting on October 8, said prosecutor Rachel Masters.

She was stopped as she tried to walk out of Poundland at the Castlegate Shopping Centre in Stockton without paying for PS32 worth of chocolate.

She struggled and tried to escape as she was taken to the back of the shop.

She swore at the guard and said: "If you don't get off me I'll stab you with my needle." She took out a capped hypodermic needle, lunged at his arm and groin, bit his right hand and ran off shouting at staff: "If you come and touch me I'll stab you."

When caught by police she said: "I bit him to get him off me because he was whacking me against the shelves. …
