Maroons Bliss; Hockey Guns a Queensland Hit for National Championships

Hockey: No stranger to wearing maroon, hockey young-gun Jordan Bliss will continue her golden run when she suits up for Queensland in the new year.

One of 13 Mackay players selected to suit up for Queensland at the Australian Indoor Championships in Goulburn in January, Jordan will pick up where she left off after a stellar 2018 which had her on the national periphery.

"I was a shadow for the Australian (under-15) outdoor team in 2018, and I made the under-15 indoor state side, and the under-15 and under-16 state outdoor team," Jordan said.

Representing Queensland's under-15 Girls Indoor Team in Goulburn will be the goalkeeper's ninth state team, as she splits her time between indoor and outdoor.

Not the only member of the family to shine, younger sister Charli, 12, will also suit up after being selected for Queensland's under-13 Flare side.

"Last year I made shadow for the team, so it's good to make it," Charli said.

The sisters are representative of a Mackay Hockey Association program that continues to churn out current and future stars, and regular state representatives.

With a good mix of ages, outside of the Bliss sisters, former Queensland Scorcher Amy Swann and Emily Ogle (Open Women's), Latesha Morante (under-18s), Jaiden Friese, Patrick Sheedy and Claire Colwill (under-15s), Connor Gould and Kaleb Mayfield (under-13 Spurs), Jack Kearines, Haiden Mellifont and Matthew Miles (under-13 Shots), have all been selected from Mackay.

Mackay regional coaching director Dylan Elliot said while the championships would be "challenging", the nature of the indoor game provided critical development for up-and-coming players.

"It's brilliant. They go away and experience indoor at the highest level for their age and what they learn they can never bring back," he said. …
