the naked eye IF SIZE is the primary consideration, the record for the biggest snowman is held by Maine, USA. In fact, it was rather charmingly a snow-woman. She stood a full 122ft tall and was called Olympia.

Since 2005, a gentleman from Alaska has erected his own giant snowman, Snowzilla, each Christmas in his front garden. It attracted a great deal of attention when it was first constructed, and neighbours complained about the traffic congestion it was causing. The enormous snowman was ordered to be removed, but public demand in support of Snowzilla was so vocal that city officials relented, and it has returned in all its glory each year.

Snowmen are popular worldwide, wherever enough snow falls, with competitions to build ever more ambitious examples. Japan holds the Guinness World Record for completing the largest number of fully-formed snowmen in just 60 minutes. This peculiar challenge resulted in 2,036 snowmen being created in the allotted time, with the enthusiastic efforts of 1,000 participants. It took a Guinness adjudicator and four witnesses several hours to measure and count the snowmen, whilst 30 stewards ensured participants used no tools.

Many people like to collect snowman memorabilia, and Guinness confirmed that the largest collection in the world includes 5,127 items, continuously added to since 1980. The owner's favourite is a pink snowman that sings the festive song Santa Baby.

But Britain is not to be outdone. Scientists at the National Physical Laboratory in west London decided to try and build the world's smallest snowman. This record-breaking miniature was just 0.01mm tall, and was achieved using tools designed for manipulating nanoparticles.

China thinks much bigger, and won the Guinness record for the largest snowman ever constructed in terms of volume. …
