Woman Dies in Blaze Fire Station Just a Few Hundred Feet from House

BRUNSWICK -- An elderly woman died yesterday in a fire at her home just a few hundred feet from a Brunswick fire station.

Frances Lawton, 95, who received burns on more than 90 percent of her body, was pronounced dead at the scene at 6:55 a.m. by Glynn County Coroner Jimmy Durden.

Durden said an autopsy showed Lawton died of smoke inhalation and burns. He ruled the death accidental.

Henry Bacon, who rented a room in the house, escaped the fire. He banged on the walls of a neighbor's house and ran to the Fire Department for help.

Bacon said yesterday that he did not know what awoke him and that he could not get to Lawton when he opened the door to her room.

"I opened the door and all I saw was smoke and fire," he said.

Raymond D. House, a deputy chief of the Brunswick Fire Department, said he was alerted to the fire by someone pounding on the front door of Station 2.

"I stepped outside and smoke had settled all around the fire station," he said. …
