Ex-State Legislator Dies at 83 Blalock Was Leader at Rescue Mission

S. Gordon Blalock, a former Florida legislator who also was a

leader in the military and at Jacksonville's City Rescue

Mission, died Tuesday at the age of 83.

A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. today at Riverside

Park Methodist Church.

Mr. Blalock was born in Valdosta, Ga., but spent most of his

life in the Jacksonville area. He was elected to the Florida

House of Representatives in 1966 and was chairman of a committee

that set up the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

In addition to military service during World War II and the

Korean War, he was the commanding officer of the Naval Reserve

division in Jacksonville.

A lawyer for 50 years, Mr. Blalock used his legal expertise to

assist the City Rescue Mission, the non-profit organization that

helps the homeless make a transition back to stable lives. He

joined the City Rescue Mission board in 1974 and became an

emeritus member last year when failing health limited his

activities. …
