Parents Get Help Teaching Home Schoolers Join Forces on Tough Classes

Article excerpt

Some home-schooling parents tend to panic when their children

reach high school age and require instruction in physics,

chemistry and other complex subjects to prepare them for

college.

"It gets very scary at that point," said Mandarin

home-schooling mom Tracey Cavender.

"It's been a very long time since I've had to tackle Algebra

II," said Phyllis Godwin, a home-schooling parent from

Arlington.

To deal with that, some home-schooling parents in Mandarin have

decided to help each other by splitting up the subjects and

teaching each other's high school-aged children.

"The basic premise is, if you teach my kid science, I'll teach

yours math," said Cavender, who started the Oasis Home-school

High School Co-op this year. The group has 18 youngsters, 16

teachers and a waiting list of seven families.

The co-op idea is relatively new, according to John Kager,

chairman of the state's advisory committee for non-public

schools.

The complex math and science can be tough for lots of parents

who aren't versed in it, said Kager, who added he's glad

home-schooling parents are finding answers.

"That's fantastic," he said.

Similar co-ops exist in Arlington and on the Westside, but they

are full, home-schooling moms said.

"It is a big need," said Cavender, who said she gets calls

daily from others wanting in. Some co-op members travel to Oasis

from Arlington, Middleburg and Callahan because the other co-ops

were full.

To join Oasis, a parent must be willing to teach a subject or

participate in some way. The co-op meets once a week at Grace

Chapel Christian Fellowship on San Jose Boulevard.

Home-schooling parents each tackle one subject. For example,

Godwin, who is a registered nurse, teaches biology, while Anjie

Green, who belongs to a historical re-enactment group, teaches

world history. …
