Mistakes Fade, Eventually B-CC Finds Way to Win in Record Eight Overtimes, 63-57

DAYTONA BEACH -- This could be the only instance where a coach

isn't irate after blowing a 26-point lead, giving up five

fumbles in nine plays and having a game-winning touchdown denied

because of a yardshort belly-flop.

Yet Bethune-Cookman coach Alvin Wyatt could smile somewhat

after the Wildcats escaped Saturday's 63-57 victory over

Virginia State in the longest game in NCAA history.

Quarterback Pa'tell Troutman's 26-yard scamper in the eighth

overtime ended the 4-hour, 50-minute marathon. The eight

overtimes eclipsed the former mark of six set in three different

games.

Despite eight turnovers -- including five in the third quarter

to allow Virginia State to run off 30 points in nine minutes --

and two missed conversions and three misdirected field goals,

the Wildcats are 3-0 for the first time since 1978.

"It's taken us a long time to be a 3-0 team and this one game

took a long time, so I guess it's fitting," Wyatt said. …
