Weinke Calms Bowden's Fears

TALLAHASSEE -- In an effort to restore quarterback Chris

Weinke's confidence after last week's six-interception loss at

North Carolina State, Florida State coach Bobby Bowden tried to

hide his anxiety. It wasn't easy.

Bowden was so concerned about the 26-year-old sophomore that

the coach essentially turned Saturday night's 62-13 home-opening

victory against Duke into a pass-fail test. He shared those

thoughts with offensive coordinator Mark Richt.

"Weinke is fixing to let us know if he can do it," Bowden said.

"If he plays like he did last week -- or worse -- he's out. He's

got to pick it up.

"He did, thank goodness. We can go on from here."

Bowden's angst grew when the 'Noles failed to move the ball on

six consecutive rushes. Already trailing 7-0 following a blocked

punt, Weinke was sacked by Duke's Nate Krill the first time he

dropped back, fumbling the ball. If not for tackle Tarlos

Thomas' recovery at FSU's 20-yard line, it could have been much

worse. …
